President of the Portuguese Medical Association (1999-2004)<\/p>\n
In November 1989, I was part of the organization of the VII National Medical Congress of the Order of Physicians, which took place at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. It was my responsibility to organize a significant exhibition there on the History of Medicine in general and Portuguese medicine in particular. It would be the 6th Exhibition of the History of Medicine. It did not seem like an easy task to me, as the previous ones had been small in size, documentary in nature and predominantly about the recent history of the profession. It could count on some pieces from the Maximiliano de Lemos Museum, thanks to the collaboration of Professor Am\u00e9lia Ferraz, its Director. But they were not enough for a significant exhibition. Knowing that Dr. Hermes Castanhas, an illustrious colleague in gynecology and obstetrics, who practiced his specialty in Aveiro, owned and looked after an extraordinary medical museum collection, I asked him for help. Dr. Hermes Castanhas immediately took the opportunity to bring a large part of his collection, if not all of it, to the Gulbenkian, making the Exhibition a high point of the congress, which was greatly appreciated by numerous visitors, both doctors and non-doctors, who confessed to being impressed by its quality and diversity.<\/p>\n
The years passed and Dr. Hermes Castanhas continued to dedicate himself and increase his collection, which became the notable House-Museum named after its founder, located in Aradas, Aveiro, which, with more than 1,800 pieces, brings together the most diverse artifacts of a more or less scientific and image-based nature, books, treatises and other objects that, over the centuries, tell the story of a profession that has always been fundamental to the society in which it is inserted. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2015, but his work did not disappear or disperse and so, thanks to his successors, the House-Museum will constitute the central nucleus of the Skope project \u2013 Museum of Medicine and Health, which will also include a research center on the History of Medicine and an area dedicated to health promotion.<\/p>\n
Dr. Hermes Castanhas, in addition to being a prestigious doctor and a man of culture, honored his profession by researching and publicizing his past, creating and preserving his history. He understood well that the so-called little story, the story of a science, or of a profession, makes the great History more perceptible and better clarifies. By preserving, with a profound knowledge of their meaning and functions, the pieces he collected and knew how to exhibit, Dr. Hermes Castanhas made an important contribution to the History of Portuguese Medicine and, consequently, to the history of Portuguese society by giving it visibility. He also followed the example of notable medical historians who, since the 19th century, have addressed various aspects of the History of Portuguese Medicine, such as Maximiliano de Lemos, Lu\u00eds de Pina, Augusto Silva Carvalho, Ferreira de Mira, M\u00e1rio Carmona, Jos\u00e9 de Vasconcelos e Menezes and others. All of them with notable reference works and mandatory reading, but none, except Professor Maximiliano de Lemos, collecting the tangible evidence of this same history with rigor and knowledge, as Dr. Hermes Castanhas did.<\/p>\n

N\u00e3o se me afigurava tarefa f\u00e1cil pois as anteriores tinham sido de pequena dimens\u00e3o, de caracter documental e predominantemente sobre\r\na hist\u00f3ria recente da profiss\u00e3o. Podia contar com algumas pe\u00e7as do Museu Maximiliano de Lemos, gra\u00e7as \u00e0 colabora\u00e7\u00e3o da Professora Am\u00e9lia Ferraz, Directora do mesmo. S\u00f3 que n\u00e3o eram suficientes para uma exposi\u00e7\u00e3o de cariz significativo. Sabendo que o Dr. Hermes Castanhas, ilustre colega ginecologista e obstetra, que em Aveiro exercia a sua especialidade, possu\u00eda e cuidava de uma extraordin\u00e1ria colec\u00e7\u00e3o museol\u00f3gica de medicina, pedi-lhe ajuda. De imediato o Dr. Hermes Castanhas se prestou a trazer grande parte da sua colec\u00e7\u00e3o, sen\u00e3o toda, para a Gulbenkian fazendo que a Exposi\u00e7\u00e3o fosse um ponto alto do congresso, a qual foi muito apreciada por in\u00fameros visitantes, m\u00e9dicos e n\u00e3o m\u00e9dicos, que se confessaram rendidos \u00e0 qualidade e diversidade da mesma.\r\n\r\nOs anos passaram e o Dr. Hermes Castanhas continuou a dedicar-se e a aumentar a sua colec\u00e7\u00e3o que se transformou na not\u00e1vel Casa- Museu com o nome do seu fundador, localizada em Aradas, Aveiro que com mais de 1800 pe\u00e7as re\u00fane os mais diversos artefactos de cariz mais ou menos cient\u00edfico, imag\u00edstica, livros, tratados e outros objectos que ao longo dos s\u00e9culos d\u00e3o conta da hist\u00f3ria de uma profiss\u00e3o que foi sempre fundamental para a sociedade onde se insere. Infelizmente falecido em 2015, a sua obra n\u00e3o desapareceu nem se dispersou e assim, gra\u00e7as aos seus continuadores, a Casa- Museu constituir\u00e1 o n\u00facleo central do projecto Skope \u2013 Museu de Medicina e Sa\u00fade, que incluir\u00e1 tamb\u00e9m um n\u00facleo de investiga\u00e7\u00e3o em Hist\u00f3ria da Medicina e uma zona dedicada \u00e0 promo\u00e7\u00e3o da sa\u00fade.\r\n\r\nO Dr. Hermes Castanhas, para al\u00e9m de ser um prestigiado m\u00e9dico e um homem de cultura, honrou a sua profiss\u00e3o investigando e divulgando o seu passado, fazendo e preservando a sua hist\u00f3ria. Entendeu e bem que a chamada pequena hist\u00f3ria, a hist\u00f3ria de uma ci\u00eancia, ou de uma profiss\u00e3o, torna mais percept\u00edvel e esclarece melhor a grande Hist\u00f3ria. Ao preservar, com profundo conhecimento do seu significado e fun\u00e7\u00f5es, as pe\u00e7as que coleccionou e soube expor, o Dr. Hermes Castanhas deu um contributo importante para a Hist\u00f3ria da Medicina portuguesa e, consequentemente, \u00e0 hist\u00f3ria da sociedade portuguesa ao dar visibilidade \u00e0quela. Seguiu ali\u00e1s o exemplo maior de not\u00e1veis m\u00e9dicos historiadores que desde o s\u00e9culo XIX abordaram aspectos diversos da Hist\u00f3ria da Medicina portuguesa, como Maximiliano de Lemos, Lu\u00eds de Pina, Augusto Silva Carvalho, Ferreira de Mira, M\u00e1rio Carmona, Jos\u00e9 de Vasconcelos e Menezes e outros.
