When we parked the car in the parking lot of the Dr. Hermes House-Museum, I couldn\u2019t help but feel a sense of curiosity bubbling up inside me. The idea of \u200b\u200bvisiting a place that houses a unique collection on the history of medicine, created by Dr. Hermes Castanhas, was exciting.<\/p>\n
As we walked towards the entrance, I was amazed at the beauty and simplicity of the building and the space around it. The exterior image was a mixture of modern and traditional architecture, of unpretentiousness and fullness, which made me think of the treasures that were hidden inside and that were about to be revealed to us. We were shown an impressive array of medical books and instruments, some of which were decades and centuries old. The guides on this guided tour told us interesting stories and curiosities about the origins of these instruments and their use in the medical profession over time.<\/p>\n
As we walked through the various rooms, floors and exhibits, I felt a deep admiration for the dedication and passion that Dr. Hermes Castanhas had to have to build such an extensive and precious collection with fascinating specimens and
\nsurprising, unprecedented in relation to anything I had seen before.<\/p>\n
As we left the museum, I couldn\u2019t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness such a unique collection and for the efforts made by the curatorial team.<\/p>\n
The technical-scientific revolution was the driving force behind the remarkable progress we have seen in various fields. It caused a significant change in the way things are done and made it possible to achieve feats that were previously considered impossible. With the advent of new technologies, we are witnessing a shift from the realm of imagination to the realm of reality. What once seemed like a product of our imagination is now part of our daily lives, and all thanks to the efforts of scientists and professionals who dared to explore new horizons.<\/p>\n
One area in which the impact of the technical-scientific revolution has been particularly profound is medicine. The emergence of new medical technologies and techniques has revolutionized the way we approach healthcare. From birth to death, there are countless medical specialties that have discovered, stored, studied and valued objects of use that have become an integral part of modern medical practice.<\/p>\n
These objects are no longer just tools used by healthcare professionals, they are now a window into the past and a testament to the progress we have made. The importance of these objects alone should not be overstated. They are not just artifacts, they are symbols of human ingenuity and perseverance. They are the materialization of human genius.<\/p>\n
When we see these objects on display in a private museum, we get a glimpse into the history of medicine and the progress that has been made over the years. They offer us a new perspective on the path we have already taken and what we can still achieve. These objects give us a sense of awe and wonder, not only because of their historical value, but also because of their relevance in the world of yesterday and today.<\/p>\n
The museum, as explained to us, will develop a basic aspect with the Educational Service. Now, the dissemination of knowledge for the construction of new audiences and \u2018new curiosities\u2019 for Science and Scientific Culture will also be
\nof enormous relevance and a basic condition for the pieces to gain new and other lives. With the ongoing exhibition project, whose scientific relevance and interdisciplinary approach are under development, we will be able to have new reflections on the History, preservation and appreciation of the heritage associated with Medicine.<\/p>\n
In the dimension presented by the Casa Hermes Foundation, it is about ensuring that this treasure can integrate the country\u2019s creative economy, which, in fact, is already a distinctive mark of Aveiro. By seeking to associate itself with the Portuguese Capital of Culture, a title that Aveiro will hold in 2024, the new Museum of Medicine and Health will develop a territorial marketing aspect that the title confers on this region.<\/p>\n
The current project presented to us by the mentors of the Casa Hermes Foundation, in Aveiro, aims to safeguard the integrity of the collection, promote the culture of medical sciences and, on this basis, also emphasize various training and social intervention initiatives. Thus, it will be possible to continue looking at and studying the past, helping us to understand that a doctor has multiple facets of continuous and ongoing social, civic, scientific and historical intervention. Caring for and helping others, with what each era gives us in technical and scientific development. This is, in fact, the humanist matrix of the Medical Being that is materialized here.<\/p>\n
The Medical Association therefore highlights the merit of the challenge initiated by Dr. Hermes de Oliveira Castanhas who, with his collection and astute spirit as a collector since the time he studied Medicine in Cuiab\u00e1, offers us a unique memory of the practice of Medicine by our ancestors.<\/p>\n
I would also like to thank Dr. Hermes\u2019 family, on behalf of the Order of Physicians and the entire society to which we dedicate ourselves, for their commitment to all this work of systematizing the collection of nearly 1,800 pieces from 20 medical specialties and revisiting our past and its context.<\/p>\n
It is an honor to preface this catalog that takes us to the near future and to a place where History, Science and Technology merge with constructed and shared Knowledge. History and its treasures can be food for utopia. A ideia de visitar um local que alberga uma cole\u00e7\u00e3o \u00fanica sobre a hist\u00f3ria da medicina, criada pelo Dr. Hermes Castanhas, era entusiasmante.\r\n\r\nEnquanto nos dirig\u00edamos para a entrada, fiquei maravilhado com a beleza e a simplicidade do edif\u00edcio e do espa\u00e7o envolvente. A imagem exterior era uma mistura de arquitetura moderna e tradicional, de despretens\u00e3o e de plenitude, o que me fez pensar nos tesouros que se escondiam no seu interior e que nos iam ser revelados. Foi-nos mostrada uma impressionante variedade de livros e instrumentos m\u00e9dicos, alguns dos quais com v\u00e1rias d\u00e9cadas e s\u00e9culos de exist\u00eancia. Os cicerones desta visita guiada contaram-nos hist\u00f3rias e curiosidades interessantes sobre as origens destes instrumentos e a sua utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o na profiss\u00e3o m\u00e9dica ao longo dos tempos.\r\n\r\n\u00c0 medida que \u00edamos percorrendo as v\u00e1rias salas, pisos e pe\u00e7as expostas, senti uma profunda admira\u00e7\u00e3o pela dedica\u00e7\u00e3o e paix\u00e3o que o Dr. Hermes Castanhas teve de ter para construir uma cole\u00e7\u00e3o t\u00e3o extensa e t\u00e3o preciosa com esp\u00e9cimes fascinantes e\r\nsurpreendentes, in\u00e9ditos em rela\u00e7\u00e3o a tudo o que eu j\u00e1 tinha visto antes.\r\n\r\nQuando sa\u00edmos do museu, n\u00e3o pude deixar de me sentir grato pela oportunidade de testemunhar uma cole\u00e7\u00e3o t\u00e3o \u00fanica e pelos esfor\u00e7os feitos pela equipa de curadores.\r\n\r\nA revolu\u00e7\u00e3o t\u00e9cnico-cient\u00edfica foi a for\u00e7a motriz dos progressos not\u00e1veis a que assistimos em v\u00e1rios dom\u00ednios. Provocou uma mudan\u00e7a significativa na forma como as coisas s\u00e3o feitas e tornou poss\u00edvel a realiza\u00e7\u00e3o de feitos que antes eram considerados imposs\u00edveis. Com o advento das novas tecnologias, assistimos a uma passagem do dom\u00ednio da imagina\u00e7\u00e3o para o dom\u00ednio da realidade. O que antes parecia um produto da nossa imagina\u00e7\u00e3o faz agora parte do nosso quotidiano, e tudo isto gra\u00e7as aos esfor\u00e7os de cientistas e profissionais que ousaram explorar novos horizontes.\r\n\r\nUm dom\u00ednio em que o impacto da revolu\u00e7\u00e3o t\u00e9cnico-cient\u00edfica foi particularmente profundo \u00e9 o da medicina. O aparecimento de novas tecnologias e t\u00e9cnicas m\u00e9dicas revolucionou a forma como abordamos os cuidados de sa\u00fade. Do nascimento \u00e0 morte, s\u00e3o in\u00fameras as especialidades m\u00e9dicas que descobriram, armazenaram, estudaram e valorizaram objetos de uso que se tornaram parte integrante da pr\u00e1tica m\u00e9dica moderna.\r\n\r\nEstes objetos j\u00e1 n\u00e3o s\u00e3o apenas ferramentas utilizadas pelos profissionais de sa\u00fade, s\u00e3o agora uma janela para o passado e um testemunho do progresso que alcan\u00e7\u00e1mos. A import\u00e2ncia destes objetos, por si, n\u00e3o deve ser exagerada. N\u00e3o s\u00e3o apenas artefactos, s\u00e3o s\u00edmbolos do engenho e da perseveran\u00e7a humanos. S\u00e3o a materializa\u00e7\u00e3o do g\u00e9nio humano.\r\n\r\nQuando vemos estes objetos expostos num museu privado, temos um vislumbre da Hist\u00f3ria da Medicina e do progresso que foi feito ao longo dos anos. Oferecem-nos uma nova perspetiva sobre o caminho que j\u00e1 percorremos e o que ainda podemos alcan\u00e7ar. Estes objetos d\u00e3o-nos uma sensa\u00e7\u00e3o de espanto e admira\u00e7\u00e3o, n\u00e3o s\u00f3 pelo seu valor hist\u00f3rico, mas tamb\u00e9m pela sua relev\u00e2ncia no mundo de ontem e no de hoje.\r\n\r\nO museu, tal como nos foi explicado, ir\u00e1 desenvolver uma vertente basilar com o Servi\u00e7o Educativo. Ora, a dissemina\u00e7\u00e3o do conhecimento para a constru\u00e7\u00e3o de novos p\u00fablicos e \u2018novas curiosidades\u2019 para a Ci\u00eancia e a Cultura Cient\u00edfica, ser\u00e3o tamb\u00e9m\r\nde enorme relev\u00e2ncia e condi\u00e7\u00e3o basilar para que as pe\u00e7as ganhem novas e outras vidas. Com o projeto expositivo em curso, cuja relev\u00e2ncia cient\u00edfica e abordagem interdisciplinar se encontram em desenvolvimento, poderemos ter novas reflex\u00f5es sobre a Hist\u00f3ria, a preserva\u00e7\u00e3o e a valoriza\u00e7\u00e3o do patrim\u00f3nio associado \u00e0 Medicina.\r\n\r\nNa dimens\u00e3o apresentada pela Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Casa Hermes, trata-se de fazer com que este tesouro possa integrar a economia criativa do Pa\u00eds, que \u00e9, ali\u00e1s, j\u00e1 uma marca distintiva de Aveiro. Ao pretender associar-se a Capital Portuguesa da Cultura, t\u00edtulo que Aveiro ostentar\u00e1 em 2024, o novo Museu de Medicina e Sa\u00fade desenvolver\u00e1 uma vertente de marketing territorial que o t\u00edtulo confere a esta regi\u00e3o.\r\n\r\nO atual projeto que nos foi apresentado pelos mentores da Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Casa Hermes, em Aveiro, visa salvaguardar a integridade da cole\u00e7\u00e3o, promover a cultura das ci\u00eancias m\u00e9dicas e, com esta base, dar tamb\u00e9m \u00eanfase a iniciativas v\u00e1rias de forma\u00e7\u00e3o e de interven\u00e7\u00e3o social. Assim, ser\u00e1 poss\u00edvel continuar a olhar e estudar o passado, ajudando-nos a perceber que um m\u00e9dico tem m\u00faltiplas facetas de cont\u00ednua e continuada interven\u00e7\u00e3o social, c\u00edvica, cient\u00edfica e hist\u00f3rica. Cuidar e ajudar o outro, com o que em cada \u00e9poca nos confere o devir t\u00e9cnico e cient\u00edfico. Esta \u00e9, ali\u00e1s, a matriz humanista do Ser M\u00e9dico que aqui se materializa.\r\n\r\nA Ordem dos M\u00e9dicos destaca, pois, o m\u00e9rito do desafio iniciado pelo Dr. Hermes de Oliveira Castanhas que, com o seu esp\u00f3lio e esp\u00edrito arguto de colecionador desde o tempo em que cursava Medicina em Coimbra, nos oferece uma mem\u00f3ria singular do exerc\u00edcio da Medicina dos nossos antepassados.\r\n\r\n\u00c0 fam\u00edlia do Dr. Hermes agrade\u00e7o tamb\u00e9m, em nome da Ordem dos M\u00e9dicos e de toda a sociedade a quem nos dedicamos, o empenho de todo este trabalho de sistematiza\u00e7\u00e3o do acervo de perto de 1800 pe\u00e7as de 20 especialidades m\u00e9dicas e de revisita\u00e7\u00e3o do nosso passado e o seu contexto.\r\n\r\n\u00c9 uma honra prefaciar este cat\u00e1logo que nos remete para um futuro pr\u00f3ximo e para um local de onde a Hist\u00f3ria, a Ci\u00eancia e a T\u00e9cnica, se fundem com o Saber constru\u00eddo e partilhado. A Hist\u00f3ria e seus tesouros podem ser alimento da utopia.
